While performativity has been intrinsic to Harris’s art practice since its inception, his first public performance was presented in 2004 at a Yale University conference on Michael Jackson as a cultural phenomenon. The piece, titled “Performing MJ,” was restaged in 2006 at the Studio Museum in Harlem as part of the exhibition “Vital Expressions in American Art.”
